SMDCC ALTERNATIVE ENERGY TASKFORCE POSITION PAPER

Preparing for the Future

Very seldom in history is there an endeavor that truly is the right issue (what), for the right reasons (why), at the right time (when) and at the right place (where)!  Alternative, renewable, efficient energy development is that issue!  It is an issue that requires the following areas for consideration:

  1. Environmental
    1. Greenhouse gases & pollution
  2. Economic
    1. Fuel pricing
      1. Fuel economy
      2. Vehicle range
    2. Effects on industry
    3. Funding sources
  3. Social
    1. Educational development
    2. Workforce development
  4. Political
    1. National security
      1. Independence from foreign sources
  5. Technical
    1. Development of new technologies
We use an automotive example below:

SMDCC believes we are at the dawn of a “Golden Age” for economic growth surrounding a new alternative energy industry in south Metro Denver for the following reasons:

  1. A dramatic increase in petroleum pricing, making research and development of alternative fuels financially feasible
  2. A dramatic increase in public recognition of the environmental impact of “global warming” and traditional fuel pollution
  3. Continuing increases in U.S. energy demand and, consequently, dependence
  4. Increasing dependence of U.S. on hostile sources of energy supplies – a national security issue
  5. Increasing worldwide competition for energy supplies
  6. Improved technology availability for alternative fuel sources and more efficient and cleaner utilization of traditional energy sources
  7. An expanded range of alternative, renewable energy sources that will generate entirely new industries and jobs while supporting established industries like agriculture
  8. Improved governmental and industrial support for alternative energy development through new fuel-efficiency and emission standards and regulations, that promotes utilization and energy independence.

These factors will continue to grow in importance, resulting in making current energy systems based on petroleum as an energy source obsolete, requiring new energy-efficient and pollution-free vehicle and power system development and purchases, thus, making the U.S. energy independent.  This will change the geo-political world and its economy, as we know it!

SMDCC believes this is a unique opportunity in history to:

  1. win for the environment (improve and preserve it),
  2. win for the people of our community, state, nation and world and their posterity (improved education , increased job opportunities, quality of life),
  3. win for their governments (strengthen public support and national security),
  4. win for the economy (improved health of most industries, improved technology spawning new industries, and improved jobs),
  5. win for the auto manufacturers (increased sales)

SMDCC will be proactive in expeditiously promoting alternative energy development that serves the greater good of our local community, state, nation and the world.
